Orlando Pirates set to complete the signing of new coach

In a move that could reshape the trajectory of one of South Africa’s most storied football clubs, the Orlando Pirates are reportedly in advanced talks to appoint French coach Fernando Da Cruz as their new head coach ahead of the 2024/25 season. While the deal remains unofficial, insiders familiar with the negotiations claim the agreement is “80% finalized,” signaling a potential new era for the Soweto giants.

### **Da Cruz: A New Direction for the Buccaneers**
Fernando Da Cruz, a 52-year-old manager with extensive experience in France’s lower tiers and youth development circuits, has emerged as the Pirates’ top target to take over the reins next season. Known for his emphasis on attacking football and structured pressing, Da Cruz’s philosophy aligns with the Pirates’ ambition to dominate domestically and reestablish themselves as continental contenders.

Though not a household name in South Africa, Da Cruz’s resume includes stints as an assistant coach at Ligue 1 clubs such as RC Lens and Lille OSC, where he honed his tactical acumen. His most recent role saw him lead French third-tier team FC Villefranche Beaujolais, where he earned plaudits for revitalizing the squad’s style of play despite limited resources.

### **The Road to Finalization**
While neither the Pirates nor Da Cruz have publicly confirmed the deal, sources close to the talks suggest only minor contractual details and backroom staff arrangements remain unresolved. Additional hurdles, such as securing a work permit and finalizing relocation terms, are expected to be ironed out swiftly.

“The club is eager to make an announcement before preseason begins,” an insider disclosed. “Da Cruz is equally excited about the project. His vision for youth integration and high-tempo football has won over the management.”

### **Fan Reactions and Expectations**
News of the potential appointment has sparked mixed reactions among the Pirates’ passionate fanbase. While some supporters welcome the prospect of a fresh tactical approach, others express caution, citing Da Cruz’s lack of experience in African football. However, many agree that after a trophyless 2023/24 campaign, a bold change could reignite the team’s fortunes.

“Da Cruz might be a gamble, but the Pirates need innovation,” said longtime fan Sipho Mthembu. “We’ve seen foreign coaches like [Josef] Zinnbauer bring success before. If the club backs him, this could work.”

### **Challenges Ahead**
Should the deal cross the line, Da Cruz will face immediate pressure to deliver silverware. The Pirates last won the DStv Premiership in 2012, and fans are growing impatient for a league title. Additionally, adapting to the physicality and pace of South African football, while navigating cultural transitions, will test the Frenchman’s adaptability.

Current interim coach Mandla Ncikazi is expected to remain in charge for the remainder of the season, with Da Cruz likely taking over in June.
