Kaizer Chiefs set complete the signing of a Orlando Pirates defender

SABC Sport can exclusively reveal that former Orlando Pirates defender Paseka Mako is in advanced discussions to join arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs, in a potential move that would send shockwaves through the South African football landscape.

According to well-placed sources close to the negotiations, talks between Mako’s representatives and the Kaizer Chiefs management have progressed significantly and are now at an advanced stage. Both parties are reportedly working towards finalizing an agreement that could see the experienced left-back make the controversial switch across the Soweto divide to Naturena.

The Potential Deal:

  • Player Profile: Paseka Mako, 30, is a versatile defender primarily known for his role at left-back but capable of playing on the left wing or even centrally. He spent five seasons with Orlando Pirates (2018-2023), making over 100 appearances and winning the MTN8 twice. He was released by the Buccaneers at the end of last season after struggling for consistent game time.

  • Chiefs’ Need: Kaizer Chiefs have been actively seeking solutions for their problematic left-back position. Despite several attempts to fill the role in recent transfer windows, consistency and defensive solidity have been lacking. Mako’s experience, familiarity with the PSL, and proven defensive capabilities make him an attractive short-to-medium term option.

  • Stage of Talks: SABC Sport understands negotiations have moved beyond initial inquiries and are now focused on the finer details of a potential contract. While not yet concluded, the advanced nature suggests a deal is a strong possibility barring any last-minute hitches.

The Soweto Derby Factor:
A move from Pirates to Chiefs (or vice-versa) is always loaded with significance. Players crossing the divide instantly become figures of intense scrutiny and often face immediate backlash from their former club’s supporters. Mako, having been a servant of the Buccaneers for several years, would be acutely aware of the magnitude of such a switch. His reception from both sets of fans would be a major subplot should the move materialize.

What Mako Offers:
Should the deal be completed, Mako would bring:

  1. Vast PSL Experience: Years of top-flight football, including high-pressure Soweto Derby matches and continental competition.

  2. Defensive Reliability: Known for his work rate, tackling, and ability to read the game defensively.

  3. Versatility: Provides cover in multiple defensive positions.

  4. Set-Piece Threat: A proven aerial threat from corners and free-kicks, adding another dimension to Chiefs’ attack.

Next Steps:
While talks are advanced, sources caution that the deal is not yet over the line. Final contractual agreements and a medical would still need to be completed. However, the progress made indicates that Kaizer Chiefs see Mako as a serious solution to their left-back conundrum under the guidance of coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Reaction Anticipated:
News of these advanced talks is sure to ignite passionate debate among supporters of both clubs. Pirates fans will view it as a controversial move by a former player, while Chiefs fans will hope Mako can bring much-needed stability to their defence. The PSL transfer window buzz is set to intensify significantly if this high-profile cross-Soweto transfer is finalized.

SABC Sport will continue to monitor this developing story closely.
